That is not what the only USA manufacturer of creatine says. Mark Faulkner says do not put creatine in hot coffee. In addition, cold beverage isn’t as good as warm.
Further, if using creatine monohydrate, split into 3-5 doses during the day to improve absorption.

@Beth I was surprised to learn that creatine monohydrate is so poorly absorbed (<20%), and that is why we are all advised to take so much. Many supplements are like that (berberine, curcumin), so it’s not hard to believe. The problem is what happens to the creatine that doesn’t get absorbed? ….it continues down the digestive tract and causes the bloating and diarrhea that some people experience.
So, 2 options:
If continuing with creatine monohydrate:
- split into 3-5 smaller doses per day (to increase absorption) mixed well with a warm fluid to aid solubility (to increase absorption).
Or try one of the other formulations: Creatine HCL in particular

@Curious Good to know. I think anyone who has stopped using creatine because of side effects should revisit creatine for the many benefits: muscle energy, brain energy (I take extra after a poor night’s sleep), and even bone health. Creatine monohydrate is the most common but not the only formulation. And even monohydrate can be made well and not so well. I now look for Creapure (a supplier to many creatine brands) while I, for now, stick with monohydrate.

Creatine is this molecule
and the difference between Monohydrate and HCl is literally only whether there is an H2O or an HCl with it, both are hygroscopic. Once in the stomach, there is HCl anyways. So there is literally no difference whatsoever, eccept for a slightly more acidic pH from HCl, something different stomachs on different days, fasted or not, differ on anyways. And when the Creatine HCl powder dissolves in water, guess what, you get hydrated creatine. How am I to believe that 80% of the creatine from Monohydrate powder somehow magically refuses more water than the one it came with and refuses to dissolve in my warm stomach HCl water? And then further refuses to be absorbed for the many hours after, when it goes through the colon, too? I bet it is even absorbed rectally.
It is a made up problem.
Or are you talking about Creatine ethylester HCl?

Is there any particular reason you are sticking with monohydrate for now, considering you need to take more and spread it out… vs less and all at once?
I’m just making sure I’m not missing any potential downside before making the switch.

I am a 34-year-old male with some hair loss. I have been taking finasteride for a year and no longer have hair loss.
I am still taking finasteride 1mg every day. I learned that creatine may increase DHT in the body, which may cause hair loss in people who are sensitive to DHT.
Do you have any suggestions?

This is a mistaken belief based on a single study that wasn’t designed to test for DHT. No one I have ever interviewed thought this was true. Or that creatine was harmful in any way (in normal dosing, I’ll add).

@beth. Only my deep seated desire to spend less on everything. I am moving to the more costly creapure to get a higher quality so I’m not saving all that much anymore. Perhaps I’ll cave in. If I had any negative side effects I would switch immediately.

I started finasteride when I was your age… 33 years ago. Good for you because… you will have the prostate of a 28 year old man… when you reach my age. A gift not to need to pee all the time… get up at night. It seems good at preventing prostate cancer…yes, you keep your hair… and now reports it clears cholesterol from the blood. Lots of wins.

I guess the magic mechanism involved is the same that makes a taurine molecule go “oh dear ass, do not absorb me, I was next to a glycine molecule twelve hours ago. I will go straight into the toilet, and there better be no glycine in it, or I refuse to flush.”

@Curious if you haven’t tried it already you should try taking several smaller doses during the day to improve absorption (less going to bowel) and reduce the water retention. I am now taking 4-5 doses of 2.5g each day….with and without food just for convenience. I use warm water and make sure the creatine particles disappear before I drink it. I can’t say I have less side effects as I didn’t have any before but I do feel higher energy levels which could be better absorption or just increase the amount I am taking to get a chance at bone and brain effects.
