I wonder about other implants, like titanium implants in teeth, or bone. Back in 97, I had a traffic accident that resulted in my having a lot of metal to hold the bones in my arms, wrist and hands together. Some years later I was given the option of having them removed, but I decided not to. Beside the trauma of more surgery, I figured they’re probably fairly harmless. Honestly I have not consciously experienced any negative consequences that I can trace to them. But I’ve had them now for 28 years, and from time to time I do wonder if somehow they’re slowly leaching and perhaps affecting me now or will in the future.
I also have two dental implants. The idea with titanium is that it integrates with bone, but has been regarded as safe.
Perhaps it all depends on the exact metals and alloys. Also, joints are mobile, and there is a lot of stress and some friction which perhaps occurs less in other kinds of implants, which maybe can result in more metal migration.
