Thanks for posting this, I do take Mg-oxide (my serum Mg was low) which I know is not absorbed as much but I donāt want the citrate side effect and also it is less expensive than other formulations. I looked up a small study but long discussion of 15 Mg formulations, Predicting and Testing Bioavailability of Magnesium Supplements which is informative in a general way. I think Dr. Brad is correct that āsupplementationā is the key word.

SGLT2 inhibitors seem to improve magnesium homeostasis and increase serum Mg levels: Canagliflozin - Another Top Anti-aging Drug - #961 by adssx
However, as blood magnesium is just 1% of body magnesium: how relevant that is?! I did not measure my blood Mg before/after starting dapagliflozin so I cannot confirm the finding.
Anyway: I tried magnesium threonate (āLife Extension, Neuro-Mag, Magnesium-L-Threonateā) and it gave me skin rash. I stopped, and the skin rash stopped. I waited one week and repeated the experiment: same result. Waited another week: same.
So I switched to magnesium citrate: no skin rash, but it was too laxative for me. Now trying magnesium glycinate (also called bisglycinate).

Hmmm I bought the same Life Extension Neuro-Mag you haveā¦ I also have Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium Taurate. So far started with Mg Glycinate firstā¦ nothing out of the ordinary. We shall see. However, before I was taking 2:1 calcium and magnesium and I started getting cramp upā¦ which I thought was weirdā¦ anyway I realised that we do not need calcium supplement.

I tried various formulations, but currently Iām taking mag glycinate. Not taurate, as I supplement daily with taurine approx. 3g, but donāt supplement with glycine, so that seems fine.Tbh, I havenāt experienced subjectively any difference between the various formulations.Currently I take 100mg/day.
Far more important than the form, is the from. The level of outright fraud in the supplement industry is such, that I am super careful about which brands I buy - itās not just about the levels (or even presence!) of the active ingredient, but impurities, fillers, binding agents, manufacturing standards and so on. For magnesium, I buy from NOW.

Do you mean 100 mg of elemental magnesium? (so more in terms of magnesium glycinate)
And yes the brand matters as much if not more, we have a thread with the reliable brands.

The one I recommend to patients is a mixture, and one may choose to take less than the 3 capsules (has 426 mg of elemental Mg in 3 capsules). The Doublewood Mag-8 seems cost effective and I believe all their supplements are 3rd party tested.

Iāve been taking triple calm by natural rhythm.
Iām concerned by the āno nameā brand, but 75mg of each of these three seemed goodā¦ but I dunno and always searching for something better.

Prone to middle-of-the-night leg cramps. Even supplementing to almost 100% of the RDA (I use magnesium glycinate mostly) still sometimes get them. But I found an OTC magnesium product that prevents them. It is a foam, topically applied. If I remember to use it every night, no cramps. At first I was buying the smaller pump bottles ā awful, the stuff comes out as a runny smelly liquid. But the larger bottle has a better pump and the stuff comes out as a foam, as it is supposed to.

Fascinating that a topical was significantly better for you. I guess it makes sense for a localized issue?
In trying to think of a more pleasant experience for you, I remembered that Alo Yoga sent me a free trial of their magnesium oil with my order. I see itās pretty pricey, but maybe not so bad when they have a 20% off saleā¦

Have you tried other topicals?
And do you think these help with our magnesium levels? Or just for localized issues? It would be nice to skip pills on occasion !

Have no idea if it helps with overall levels. Just glad not to be awakened in pain.

Middle of the night leg cramps is my body telling me Iāve taken too much of a drug or a side effect of another pharmaceutical that my body wonāt tolerate in any amount (statins in my case).
Might be worth lowering doses of whatever you take across the board to see if leg cramps go away and then increase them individually to see where too much of one thing might be causing it.

Thanks, good point, and I should do this. I seem to be sensitive. I got really bad cramps the very first time I took bempedoic acid. I couldnāt believe it! But did the test, and yes, it was the bempedoic acid. Who knew? But learned that yes, this can be an (admittedly uncommon) effect of BA.
