I’ve never paid much attention to it, but my BUN readings on my last few blood tests have been marginally out of the acceptable range on the high side. My doctor has dismissed these readings as likely to be dehydration on the day of the test. But I came across some recent articles that suggested that a chronically higher BUN reading may be caused by excess ammonia. Another article suggested that there is a fairly common SNP that causes elevated ammonia. Has anyone done any testing for ammonia after receiving an elevated BUN reading or hyperammonemia and connected that with a DNA SNP?

Dehydration though is the most probable cause if before that your BUNcwas usually normal. What’s your creatinine reading?

I have also noticed that my BUN is elevated over the past 6 weeks. I don’t think I was dehydrated for each of the two labs I did but can’t be certain. Typically my BUN is around 23 mg/dl and twice in the last six weeks it has been 29 and 30 mg/dl. Other kidney markers are normal. My creatinine numbers are typically on the low end around 0.62 mg/dl. Any thoughts? Any supplements can do this? Too much Vitamin D3? I have increased my sodium intake over this time so I have cut back on sodium to see if that makes BUN levels go back to normal.
