Well, I was trying to be nice, because the right word to use in his case was FAT, and not overweight. Or if i still wanted to be nice I’ll say obese. As far as being a bit overweight yes, I do believe it is good for longevity. Myself am a bit fat, but only by about 15lbs and I don’t consider that to be bad, other than for the way clothes fit.

btw, i don’t go by standard way of if you are this tall you should weigh this much. I weigh about 235LBS at 6 feet tall, but I am body type almost exactly as mike Tyson when he was fighting, meaning I have huge bones and muscles. The lowest I have ever been (after i grew to my max height) was 200 in senior year in HS but if I shoed you the pic you’d think i was malnourished lol. Anyway, my ideal weight is 220-225.

BMI and hip fracture risk:

If someone was on CR throughout life, very low BMI, it seems like they could break their hip, which has a high mortality rate. Of course it’s not a good idea to be obese, but 22 BMI, in general, seems like the sweet spot in a U-shape curve, pending better evidence.

I think the bigger issue here is that BMI is such a bad metric. All the one biomarker only studies are too simplistic to capture anything really meaningful.

The only consistent take from these BMI studies is that a too low BMI is bad because if you have a very low BMI you are basically frail.
On the other hand a higher BMI can be more muscle mass, more bones density and/or even more “healthy” fat (ie subcutaneous but not visceral fat).

I agree, I just turned 59, & the older I get the more resolute I am to maintain my current weight, bone health & mobility; we can lose them all so easily, particularly muscle, & it’s much harder to replace. I’d rather gain a little weight (which is easy to lose), than risk muscle loss.

I watched Peter Attia interview Don Layman recently, Don said 60+ year old patients confined to bed rest (eg post fall, hip/other fracture, etc) catabolise much faster (4x?).
I’d seen this rapid sarcopenia happen, but hearing that fact, & the stats for surviving the bed rest/hospitalisation following a fall, was sobering.

Perhaps more an issue for average 60+ women, with less attention paid to maintaining skeletal muscle, female “glorification” of dieting & thinness, & body composition changes, bone loss etc associated with menopause?

The loss of the perennially healthy Suzanne Somers threw me, bless her.
She slipped on a rickety rock-staircase leaving a yoga studio, breaking a hip.
Convalescing, she used a walking stick & misstepped, fell down her long, curved staircase, & broke her neck, & most of one side of her body.
She seemed to lose ½ her bodyweight & rapidly deteriorated; she was barely mobile & in great pain. This likely invited her latent breast cancer to return; sadly, she died within months.

Might want I consider focusing on extra resistance training as the main pillar of the plan to mitigate frailty - and then let that drive more healthy food/protein intake as your body requires.

No, that is not quite what I mean.

I have been lifting weights 35+ years, & maintain correct BMI (for what BMI is worth; I prefer DEXA).

I do not want to drop below my current weight, & particularly want to maintain muscle mass & bone density.

You may be familiar with the term ‘bulking’, running a caloric surplus to add muscle, followed by ‘cutting’, a caloric deficit to drop the body fat that accompanied muscle growth.
End result; same size, more muscle.

So far I have avoided bulking, & maintain a high muscle mass by recomping & optimised diet (takes longer).

The more I age, the more important I maintain body composition, & do not lose weight, or muscle (or bone). I will now consider bulking/cutting if necessary to achieve this aim. That is what I meant by:

‘I’d rather gain a little weight (which is easy to lose) than risk muscle loss’.

Sarcopenia can set in rapidly in old age (x4 speed in bed rest!) & is incredibly difficult to reverse, as is bone loss. The aim is to not let it happen (as much as age & circumstance allow). In my opinion, it is a one way ticket to frailty, poor quality of life & early death.

My healthspan is more important than my lifespan; I don’t want to be just kept alive, for the sake of it.

I spent Xmas day at an aged facility, it’s so sad, so many beautiful, frail, broken souls, begging for a pill to end it, praying they won’t wake to another day.

However there is some theoretical basis that it may enhance the tissue rejuvenation effects of shockwave therapy, otherwise by itself it has unclear long term safety or efficacy. Process: + A tourniquet was applied at the base of the penis, the treatment dose (100 units of BoNT-A in 2 ml of saline) was distributed along 4 points, right and left distal and proximal shaft using a 23G insulin syringe. + The solution was injected into 4 different injection sites 1 inch proximal to corona and 1 inch distal to pubo-penile junction at right and left cavernosa, respectively. Following injection, a fine massage was applied to the injection sites for 5 min and the band was removed after 20 min.

Using Botox is in my view something that is not repairing the body’s ability to maintain itself, but instead a cosmetic crutch.

I found this video interesting of someone on pretty much blueprint diet. She talked with a dietitian and recommended some changes in her diet which she did. Dietitian is much more qualified than nutritionists, which I didn’t know…

  1. Her calories were way too low. 1700 → 2200 kcal for maintenance (1900 for cutting calories if goal).

  2. Her protein was too low, based on what she read on internet that 0.8 g / kg is baseline, the dietitian recommended 1.5 g / kg of protein. She increased lupini beans (lower carb), and protein powder.

  3. She wasn’t taking enough B12, the dietician recommended 1000 mcg, 3 times a week.

  4. She wasn’t taking Vitamin D3 because she thought she was in the sun all the time, but she really isn’t and uses sunscreen, which is good. She started taking 50 mcg (2000 iu) of Vitamin D3 a day. She started to feel much happier after starting this.

  5. The dietitian recommended variety. For example, if she ate kale in smoothie one day, maybe switch up to spinach another day. To get different plants and benefits from them.

Anyway lots of interesting stuff. And she did lose strength and muscle mass in leg press by about -4% previously while on blueprint for 90 days, if I remember correctly. The higher protein and calories will probably help with this.

What is really happening here? It is the pleasure economy - not the die economy. People enjoy that food, a lot.
The real problem is really about not focusing on happiness, including long term happiness. For many, this might involve taking drugs to lower their cholesterol, or drugs that help them lose weight by reducing their appetite.

People aren’t dropping dead from eating McDonalds or any fast food. The problem is mostly calorie balance, eating too many calories. And not taking drugs! For example, statins, SGLT2i, BP lowering meds. People aren’t even adherent to their own medications.

The real problem is the lack of longevity, and healthspan drugs, and so forth. Not refined wheat, oil, chicken, sodium…

This type of thinking can prevent people from focusing on what matters most.

Anyway how I am approaching diet from now on, I’ll eat whatever I want (aka Warren Buffett), take longevity/healthspan drugs, watch calories etc. But try to focus meals towards the start of the day to avoid high serum sodium levels during night and dehydration.

That seems reasonable. If I wasn’t trying to lose weight, I would be eating fast food all day long along with my statins, acarbose and fiber :smiley:

However, human bodies are not simple; they are complex systems that do not always behave rationally. Human biology is far more intricate than the simplistic notion of “calories in - calories out” and the idea of regulating biomarkers solely with medicines.

Nutrition science is too vague in regards to what is actually the best kind of diet. Until that is settled, quality of life matters more.

While I occasionally indulge in McDonald’s as a guilty pleasure, I wouldn’t consider it quality by any definition of the term.
