OK folks - lets not get into the diet wars here

Plenty of research on all sides of this debate, and lots of questionable, correlational studies too, and anecdotes galore. Find a diet that works for you and don’t proselytize!

Why do people try something without any research - or studies?

For me, my current carnivore diet is an experiment. I have tried many diets over the years including vegetarian. Because the term “carnivore diet” is relatively new there is a scarcity of research using this term. Carnivore is almost exactly like the Atkin’s diet which has been fairly heavily researched. As far as I am concerned all of the guru MDs including some vocal cardiologists are just advocating the Atkins diet under a different name. So, just research the papers on the pros and cons of the Atkin’s diet. I am not promoting any diet for others.

"What are the basic foods for the Atkins diet?

meats: beef, pork, lamb, chicken, bacon, and others.
fatty fish and seafood: salmon, trout, sardines, and mackerel.
eggs: omega-3 enriched or pastured — most nutrient-dense (16)
low-carb vegetables: kale, spinach, broccoli, asparagus, and others.
full-fat dairy: butter, cheese, cream, full fat yogurt."

On close examination of the gurus promoting a carnivore diet, they all eat some carbs. So they are basically doing Atkin’s.

So, I am among the very few on a pure carnivore diet. After I have been on this diet for a long enough time to influence my blood work, I will decide if it’s right for me.

I mean… everyone here is trying rapa without any definitive studies on its effect on human aging. We’re all hoping that the mouse studies translate into effects on humans.

This made me chuckle…

I’m not even a vegan but that’s literally a strawman argument.

It’s… not an argument. It’s humor.

What’s funny about comparing a 76 yr old (bottom right corner) with people in their 40’s and 50’s? You’re comparing apples to oranges.

The advice from the people on the left will tend to lead people to an early grave and erectile dysfunction before it. Not because they’re pro-meat, just because they give terrible advice in general.

Here’s a younger McDougall… Where he unsurprisingly looks younger.

Yes, you are probably right there. Just yesterday I had lunch with my aunt who is 83 and her aunt (my great aunt) who is 98 and is the last of four sisters who still lives, one sister was my grandmother who died of accidental death in her mid nineties, just few days shy of 95th birthday, second sister was murdered at a robbery attempt when she was 92 and third lived to 99 and died of accidental death as well. Their mother lived to 97 and died in her sleep. My great aunt is really doing great for someone that is almost centenarian, really sound minded, agile and mobile. I was also really surprised but my aunt at 83 and how well she looks as at lunch there was also her daughter in law who is 56 and looked almost as old as her. We talked about longevity and family genes and my aunts joked both that they have them. They also were talking how they never really did anything special to support their longevity. Daughter in law is obsessed with working out, what she eats or don’t eat, sun exposure etc. so maybe there is really a lot in genes and luck and not in what you do. But both my aunt and great aunt said that being optimistic and happy and really wanting to live makes a difference and living by “buddhist” principle of moderation might be the key.

Dude. It’s humor. Stop being autistic.

No dude, it isn’t for most. People take that seriously. I’ve seen it too often.
I’ll keep pointing out you’re comparing people nearing 80 yrs old to people in their mid 40’s when you do so. It’s crap humor.

Try to be original, desertshores already posted something similar.

You have mouse studies… one human study… on rapamaycin.
About zero on the carnivore diet except surveys.

The carnivore diet is as unscientific as denying evolution or climate change.
There are no good reasons to follow it and all the research points towards plant based for longevity.

Just my opinion, low-carb, keto, and carnivore diets are just slight variations of the original Atkins diet. This diet was quite controversial at the time and counter-intuitive to conventional thinking at the time that fat consumption was bad.

After a while studies of the results of the diet surprised the skeptics.

The carnivore, low-carb, etc. are ketogenic diets. There are a multitude of doctors from prestigious institutions that endorse ketogenic diets.

Yes, there is still controversy, but the more I read about the benefits of ketogenic diets the more I am convinced that this is this diet plan for me. I have been on low-carb or ketogenic for many years and it has worked well for me. I have freely displayed throughout some threads in this forum the results of my blood tests.

Everyone has to do their own research using Google Scholar, PubMed, etc., and not YouTube to determine which diet is best for them.

Robert Atkins died from atherosclerosis at age 72.

Ancel Keys died at age 100, two months from age 101, popularizer of the Mediterranean diet.

So we’re now doing the diet wars here?

It all comes down to apoB and total calorie intake in the end.

No, there might be benefits of the Mediterranean diet that is not because of apoB or total calorie intake. At least according randomized controlled trials.

I know that the Mediterraean diet can reduce all cause mortality but do we have any data on diet where both diet groups where on a statin?

I don’t know about that specifically because I haven’t looked into it in depth. But for example people believe they will be unhappy with a healthy diet. But a modified Mediterranean diet works better than anti-depressants by a factor of 3-4 in improving depression. Effect size 1.2 which is massive vs. anti-depressants at around 0.3-0.4 typically. Of course the number can be much lower than 1.2 in reality yet still be impressive.
