Possibly Vitamin D, though this paper suggests it may be nitric oxide from the skin.

After reading the study, the most likely explanation is that the observation is an artifact.

I’d say they have a long lifespan because they have an excellent medical system. Too many confounding factors on this one. In Hong Kong, we have the longest life expectancy in the world, and the majority of women avoid the sun like the plague as whiter skin is fashionable. Men are out in the sun playing basketball and soccer and are getting a lot more sun. Yet, the life expectancy gap between those with a lot of sunlight and those without is no different from other countries. I’d say the sunlight issue is a red herring for longevists. Take your vitamin D if you are deficient and move on.

Hong Kong has an excellent free medical system. I think that’s the key to a long life. (Plus lots of walking and fresh, unprocessed food.)
