I’ve become increasingly convinced that our gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in neurotransmitter regulation, particularly when it comes to sleep. Beyond the usual complex prebiotics and probiotics, I’ve observed remarkable effects from specific bacterial strains:
For those struggling with sleep, consider making yogurt with these strains. Consume it 2-3 hours before bedtime. Personally, I’ve noticed an immediate and pronounced improvement in my sleep quality. This effect surpasses anything I’ve tried in the supplement-area — glycine, theanine, melatonin, and apigenin included.

@Beth i use the life extension melatonin product (on Fullscript) that has immediate plus extended release. That way I can take it without trying to time the cycle as described by @John_Hemming. I only will take it if I wake up in the middle of the night and feel awake (not sleepy). I’ll read for a bit and as soon as I feel sleepy it’s back-to-sleep time (even if I have to do a lengthy meditation). I never let my brains desire to look at my phone succeed…my brain has to know that there is no point in tempting me.

You know what is interesting, at least to me…
I went to a fancy schmancy eye doc in Palo Alto who has equally fancy schmancy equipment… upon first meeting me, and not knowing my diet, he said you eat a lot of greens, don’t you? I said I’m vegan and live on kale. He said I can tell by looking into your eyes. He said you never need blue blockers because your eyes naturally do it for you…he said go ahead and look at what you want to before bed.
I don’t understand any of it and can’t even say if it’s true. My skeptic self assumed he said that to everyone, but I found out he didn’t say that to my husband nor to some of my friends.
So go figure?

@SilentWatcher I would LOVE to discuss this with you more.
I make my own soy yogurt with a random probiotic, so I could definitely experiment with different strains. I might need your help.
Last week I did try to use my Pendulum glucose control probiotic to make my yogurt and had to dump that disaster down the drain. I know realize all probiotics don’t work!
I am particularly interested in improving my gut after taking the ZOE test and learning I have the gut of someone living on McDonald’s. Because of my freakishly good diet, there are not many things I know of left for me to try.
I have tried inositol, magtein, and Apigenin and never really noticed anything
I forgot to add, I do take glycine with my lysine and melatonin … no idea if it helps but i do take it
@Vaughan_Williams
I haven’t heard of bacopa and will google! Just the other day I learned from you all that even if I’m on metformin, I might benefit from berberine, so I’ll try that in my evening dose (which is kind of early!) to see if I notice anying. It’s also in my fullscript cart!
@约瑟夫_拉维尔 Thx for that. So, if you are taking it upon waking in the middle of the night, can you share why you would take a version that contains extended release vs only the regular version ? I imagine I will learn more when I listen to your new episode

I do the same but with Organic A2 milk. Are you sure you are not making and consuming poison (soy yogurt). I don’t know of any food (nor substance) that can be more dangerous than soy milk or yogurt?

I generally follow this recipe from Dr Davis: New improved L Reuteri yoghurt method - luvele EU with one difference - according to my research, the amount of bacteria grows significantly if you let it incubate for 20-24 hours. Synergetic combinations you can try are:

I won’t have dairy for personal reasons but can use other plant based milks. What is dangerous about soy?
I make my own cashew cream and almond milk, but I buy organic West Life unflavored single ingredient soy milk to make cold start instant pot yogurt. I started using it because, to make cashew yogurt, I had to boil the cashew cream and nothing is easier than dumping the box of soy milk into the instant pot and emptying a probiotic capsule and hit start
I then started using it for my lattes to max out my protein, even though I much prefer almond milk…
I don’t know if any of that background helped you!
Here is a recipe with coconut milk: Step by step L.Reuteri coconut yogurt recipe - Luvele US (I am not affiliated with that company! These recipes simply work
)
p.s. if you try it - looking forward to your personal experience and impact on sleep.

Some interesting points in this thread.
From everything I’ve tried to improve sleep - taking 75mg pregabalin before bed has been the game changer. I used to wake up 4 times per night now only wake up once. Fantastic sleep 8 hours every night and wake up feeling refreshed - not groggy. By far the best thing I’ve tried.
I’ve also used trazodone but with no real positive impact for me personally. Tried all the supplements as well to no avail.
Aside for Rx, it’s also worth noting that winding down at night is paramount.

Gotcha. If you can’t use dairy (for whatever reason) than best IMO to go with organic oat milk, though cashew and other nuts milk could/should be ok.
Soy is bad because it throws off hormone balance in the body, plus it is loaded with some antibodies. Most plants have antibodies, but soy has probably more than any other food out there. Antibodies are bad for many things one of them being your gut biome. I heard somewhere that if you eat soy your gut will be so badly altered that the devil will come and take residence into your gut lol.

no way in hell any of that would help me consider soy. I happened to be one of those guys that not only I’d ban soy and soy products (even for animal feed) but I would literally make it illegal to possess and consume it. I’d much more likely be in favor of legalizing all drugs including cocaine than legalizing soy. And btw while it may sound like I’m joking but am actually 100% serious.
@Beth the melatonin product I mentioned is both immediate and extended release. The extended release is to avoid missing the window of the 90 minute cycle @John_Hemming mentions where you may be in a sympathetic state for a while. He says there is no point taking immediate release melatonin at the start of a 90 minute alert phase. But, since I take an extended release product, some melatonin is getting into my blood stream around the time the sympathetic phase ends.
That is the theory. It almost always works. I feel alert for a bit, and then I can feel the sleepiness come on like a freight train.

The Japanese must be in trouble. Wait a minute, they live longer than people in Western countries. Soy does not affect testosterone levels.
” Regardless of the statistical model, no significant effects of soy protein or isoflavone intake on any of the outcomes measured were found. Sub-analysis of the data according to isoflavone dose and study duration also showed no effect. This updated and expanded meta-analysis indicates that regardless of dose and study duration, neither soy protein nor isoflavone exposure affects TT, FT, E2 or E1 levels in men.”

Plants do not contain antibodies. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system of animals, not plants. The term you might be looking for is probably “antinutrients”. Soy contains antinutrients like phytic acid and trypsin inhibitors, but these are present in many other foods as well. Proper preparation methods, such as soaking, fermenting, and cooking, can significantly reduce the levels of these antinutrients.

Yes antinutrients it is, and yes many foods (especially plant based) have these, but soy has more than most. And finally who has the time to do all that, soaking and fermenting and sprouting and this and that. Much easier to call it a poison and ban it, or as is my case NEVER eat it.

Indeed, they are. I read that Japanese men have 30-40% less testosterone than the world average. and guess which countries have highest? Well, you guessed it right, middle eastern countries, and guess again what these countries have in common, well again you guessed it right they consume mostly meat and animal products, and definitely they do Not consume soy. So, yes Japanese are in real trouble in more ways than one. BTW, Japan is the only country in the world that their GDP has shrunk in last 30 years. It was at $6.5T in 1994, It is now at $5.2T(adjusted for 94 dollars their GDP has gone down by more than 50%). And as if by chance or maybe luck wants to be on my side (of the story) it so happened that it was in early 90’s that soy become the god’s food lol.
Well, you might say how is this related to eating soy or even testosterone. I may NOT know much, but I guarantee that i know enough that a man with a testosterone level of 1100 is much MORE productive, and much more capable than a man with a testosterone level of 200.

Lol, and Japan’s economic problems are caused by eating soy? If the topic interests you, it might be worth getting to know more about the Bubble of the Japanese stock market and real estate market (1986-1991) and its poor treatment by the authorities. It is also worth paying attention to the age distribution of the Japanese population. In Europe, many countries are facing exactly the same problem in the coming years/decades. Avoiding soy won’t help.
I don’t think soy has anything to do with Japanese testosterone levels, but diet probably does. For example, amount and type of fat. But I am ready to change my mind if there is valid research evidence on the matter. According to the meta-analysis I posted, this is not the case at the moment.
I avoid soy drinks, oat drinks, almond drinks, etc., but for a different reason. I eat tofu every week and my testosterone levels are normal. But this is getting off-topic now, so I’ll stop here.

I hear your point but there are always counterpoints. Yes, Japan did have a stock market bubble and real estate bubble etc… but here in US we have had about 4 recessions and 2-3 stock and real estate bubble crashes in the same period and our GDP has still gone up by more than 300% in last 30 year’s.
Obviously, it sounds ridiculous, but I truly believe that soy is to be blamed. In my way of thinking eating soy does something (yet unknown to scientific community at large) that alters one’s body in more ways than one. I think it destroys a man’s innate will to survive, flourish and be successful. BTW, Japanese man have the highest suicidal rate of all the western world also. Also, the sperm count has decline by more than 40% in western world, and guess what I’m going to blame it on? As crazy as it sounds, yes, I do blame soy for all or most Japan’s ills and a majority of ills in the western world. I think soy is evil and should be avoided at all costs. BTW, I’m not anti-plant food. in moderation some of plant foods are nutritious and very healthy. Soy is not one of them! Sorry to be so blunt about it.
I always buy organic, but it just occurred to me that maybe some of the organic farms might be feeding animals with organic soy. Well, I definitely have some homework to do. I’ll list all the organic food I buy and will personally call the farms and ask them if they use organic soy for animal feed. If they do, I might have no choice but to go off grid somewhere with my couple acreage and grow my own food.

So zero points for evidence and also zero points for understanding the cultures and politics of different countries. Peace and love
