Random nutrition question relating to Johnson

Does anyone know why he chose cocoa vs the less processed cacao? I ask because I tried his cocoa and don’t enjoy it nearly as much as my cacao powder.

Johnson must be the most probed and punctured human research subject in history. Collateral benefit for us less financially endowed may be finding out if over-treatment has any negative effects-first do no harm principle.

I don’t know and I don’t care when it comes to chocolate.
I eat either 80% or 90% Sam’s Dark Chocolate Bars available at some Walmarts.
It is sourced from Switzerland. I don’t care if it is the absolute best choice it’s the one I like and eat every day. Oddly, I prefer the taste of the 90%, but it is not always available.
When it comes to chocolate and black coffee, I do my own thing and do not care what the “gurus” think. :grin:

It’s this Sam’s Club by chance? If so, I don’t have access to that one, but I LOVE super high percentage and open to suggestions !

Think it might be because this large clinical trial:

Makes perfect sense it was from Mars! Big cacao is not funding large studies :slight_smile:

If there are such wonderful results with Cocoa powder, then I assume that the results with Cacao would be even better.

Oddly, Sam’s chocolate bars are only available at Walmart.
They can be bought bought online. Even though the 90% has a much higher melting point than milk chocolate, I wouldn’t buy it online in the summer unless you live in a cooler climate.

When you mention “cacao,” what exactly do you mean? The term is used in so many different ways that it’s hard to understand your specific reference. I use cocoa from https://flavanaturals.com, sourced from Barry Callebaut. This cocoa is minimally processed to maintain high flavanol levels while still tasting great, in my opinion. I’m not sure what your taste preferences are, but achieving high flavanol content involves more than just processing. Growing conditions and plant type are also crucial factors. So, it is more complex than simply distinction between cocoa and cacao.

These are good questions and I guess I don’t know enough. I think you are saying, even though cacao is less processed than cocoa, it might have fewer flavanols of a particular brand of cocoa, even if it’s more processed

I only know that I’ve really enjoyed:

Navitas brand cacao nibs

And for a more apples to apples comparison to cocoa powder, I’ve purchased diaspora cacao powder and loved the flavor.

I then tried blueprint cocoa powder and thought, meh. I was assuming it was a cacao vs cocoa thing.

Thoughts?

@desertshores I’m totally ordering that!!!

@LaraPo That’s what I always assumed!

I love nibs in my yogurt in the morning, but with the heavy metals it just seems kind of stupid to eat the heavy metals then use chelation to take them out. Much smarter and less expensive to not eat them in the first place.

Sigh… I started them for health but then grew to love them!

Does that mean you skip cocoa, too… or you look for brands that have been tested for lower levels

I just found a Reddit thread that, if correct, shows the flavanols in various brands.

For example
Cocoavia is 106 per gram
Then it drops off to 25 per gram (shown in this photo)

This cocoa supposedly has 50-70 mg/g flavonols.

I bought a pound of zeolite powder, not the expensive stuff. Later I found out that powder only binds heavy metals in the gut and does not make it into the bloodstream, so I don’t use it much. Now it occurs to me that this could be the use case for it. Swallow a tsp of zeolite, eat a tablespoon of nibs. I wonder how well it works.

Heavy metals are bad.

I don’t see where to purchase this? Possibility not available in the US? I see there are bars but I couldn’t even find the ingredients?

Sigh, you are probably correct!

What is a chocoholic to do?

How do you rank on the rejuvenation Olympics? I am in the middle of the pack BJ is number 2. I plan to catch-up soon!

Hi… being honest - not a fan of Hannah Went the co-founder of TruDiagnostic (all fluff). Mediocre degree - in conversations not impressed. Not worth going there.

I put my trust in Gordon Lauc - Chief Scientific Officer of GlycanAge and Dr. Yelena Budovaskaya Stanford anti-aging researcher of TruMe Labs.

Keep up the great work!
