@DeStrider your results with empagliflozin are an outlier. The published studies show only mild/modest weight loss. By itself (without a GLP agonist on board), it makes me hungrier so I compensate for the calories I pee out by eating more. I’m happy for you that it’s worked so well (I think @RapAdmin had similar weight loss with an SGLT2i(?)

The studies I read show about a 1/2 lb of weight loss from empagliflozin a month. That bumps up to 1 lb a month if you keep calories constant.

I eat a mostly plant based diet with nuts, and I can’t say that I’ve been eating a lot more calories since starting empagliflozin. I’m happy to be an outlier. I just hope I don’t plateau soon!

Yes, perhaps a little less. I lost something like 5 to 7 lbs total over the first month I think of using canagliflozin. I lost about 15lbs with metformin; which seems much more effective for me to lose a little weight.

Thank you for initiating this discussion. I’m a 69 yo female - My body fat percentage at 31.6 pounds is at the 44th percentile when compared to a “young normal,” but the 10th percentile when compared to age norms. I thought that wasn’t too bad until I realized the average person is very overweight. Visceral fat was less than half a pound so assume that’s good? Just about to start 3x/week of strength training. How do I figure out a good goal for %fat?

The maple syrup trial showed that android fat mass, the fat in the abdominal region, significantly decreased in the maple syrup group as compared to an increase in the group consuming the sucrose solution

The study was jointly funded by Québec Maple Syrup Producers and the Québec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) through its healthy food production initiative, the Programme Alimentation santé.

We have large areas of wild silver maple down by the river and I used to tap them and boil it down. Smells great and the kids love the whole thing but of course it’s a major pain. It was said some huge percent of the indian’s calories came from maple syrup. I could never figure out how they could boil it down with what they had. Supposedly they got rocks hot on the fire and dropped them into logs full of sap. I don’t believe it. You can let it freeze and remove the ice for a while. It works well because the sap only flows when the temps are below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. So you can let it freeze every night. That does not solve the problem for the indians.

This article helps me see how eating sugar as a major part of their diet didn’t just kill them all.

The article said that they had people replace plain sugar with maple syrup, which leads me to wonder how much of the effect came from not eating sugar & how much from adding maple syrup.

Well, the main sugar in maple syrup is sucrose, so maple syrup is basically sucrose + polyphenols…

Happy Thanksgiving everyone  Losing the belly fat, keeping the muscle. Perhaps take more time than this guy… no need to do it in one week.

1200 calories a day is pretty extreme.

I think I’ll stick with my gradual 0.5 lbs of weight loss a week.

Google turned up some discussion of sugar, in particular sugar drinks as contributing to VAT, but given your comment, it sounds like adding the polyphenols is what matters for their experiment.

Which of course, leads to the question of which polyphenols & what the biochemistry of the alteration is …

Nice. Thanks. I really need to focus on green tea the way I used to before getting addicted to coffee.

I put a green tea bag in my mug of coffee. For the second mug, tea with cacao powder.

In regards to the title, am I correct that “central” and “visceral” fat are not synonymous? Central fat would include visceral fat and subcutaneous abdominal fat?

@JuanDaw that is interesting. I’ll have to make a mental note that you are more weird than I am. I’ll have to try harder.
